HiddenAbout this work
This painting began with the image of a bright, hinted face in a dark, dominant space expressing something hidden and secret. As it evolved, the space evoked a cave under a hill and the glow of the face was perhaps like an ancient warrior (like the Anglo Saxon warrior buried at Sutton Hoo with a gold helmet covering much of his face). However, the image suggested hope and expectation, not death, and a plant-like form grows out of the dark space to counterbalance it. The regular shape of the space also had a womb-like quality, which also reinforces the idea of something precious and hidden. Perhaps this painting is mostly about the hope of breaking out of confinement.
ContemplationAbout this work
This painting takes the facial detail of the previous work, which for me offers a serene, peaceful image. The face seems more distinctively that of a woman and the blue and gold evoke religious associations; the composition hints at images in illuminated manuscripts and stained glass. It expresses stillness as something very positive, like contemplation.
DolorosaAbout this work
Vertically, the ‘Contemplation’ image suggests to me a sad female face, a hint of the grieving Virgin – the Mater Dolorosa.
